Something Worth Celebrating
I love Valentine’s Day. Really, I love any chance to celebrate…anything. A long while ago I was on a date and when our drinks arrived - Negroni for me, martini for him - I raised my glass to cheers (or Salud! as I’m fond of. We’re not getting any younger, and I’ll take all the health I can get.) He asked me,
“Are you one of those people that has to cheers every time we get a drink?” His tone was the shade of smug-meets-playful that knew he was asking a rhetorical question.
I blushed, Uhh no, I just think it’s nice to do at the beginning!
But as the evening progressed, we paced ourselves in equal measure. With every new cocktail I, whether through unconscious desire or simply muscle memory, raised my glass for another moment to wish each other health. He was absolutely right. We both thought it was funny.
I do like to cheers with every new drink. I’ll cheers mid-cocktail if you bring up something good that’s happened to you. Or something good that might potentially happen to you. or if we find something in common. Or simply to recognize what a lovely time we’re having.
People have asked me what my favorite holiday is…and the truth of the matter is that I just like celebrations. They come in different formats, but it is the act of jubilation itself that is my favorite.
Life is so fleeting and often it’s filled with moments that are not worthy of celebration: pain, loss, grief, monotony, errands, tax season, trips to the DMV. But these seasons don’t last forever. Pain is relieved, errands get finished, tax season gets delegated to a consummate professional. The sun peeks through the clouds, spring shows up.
I have received a lot of love and affection in part because I have a lot of love and affection to give. So this Valentine’s Day I have a lot to celebrate, and I hope you do too. (And if it doesn’t feel like there is…let’s change that. 💕)
